What we do

Cooling here isn't a comfort upgrade. For about eight months a year, it's how the house stays livable and dry.

Technician servicing an outdoor AC unit01

AC repair & no-cool calls

Capacitors, contactors, fan motors, refrigerant leaks and frozen coils. We find and fix leaks rather than just topping off refrigerant, and trucks carry the parts that fail most in a New Orleans summer.

System replacement

Sized for your house and our humidity, not just square footage. Oversized systems cool fast and leave the air clammy, which is the last thing you want here. We pull permits where required, protect your floors and haul off the old equipment. Ask us about raising the outdoor unit on a stand while we're at it.

Ductless mini-splits for shotguns & older homes

Shotgun singles and doubles, camelbacks and Creole cottages often have no good place for ducts. Ductless heads room by room give you quiet cooling without tearing into plaster or high ceilings. We'll also help you figure out outdoor unit placement on narrow lots.

Ductwork under raised homes & in attics

Ducts under a raised house or in a hot attic sweat, sag, come apart and get crushed. Moisture-soaked duct insulation drips onto floors and framing. We repair, re-insulate, re-strap and replace ducts, and show you photos from under the house.

Humidity control

A house can be 74° and still feel sticky. We check humidity, fan settings, airflow and system size, then fix the cause. If that's not enough, we install whole-house dehumidifiers tied into your ductwork.

Drain lines & musty smells

Clogged condensate lines, overflowing pans and float switches that shut the system down. A musty smell at startup usually means a wet coil, a dirty pan or sweating ducts. We fix the AC side, and if there's mold growth beyond the system, we'll tell you so and suggest you bring in a remediation specialist.

Heat pumps & heating

Our winters are short and mild, so a heat pump is often the smartest way to heat and cool. We repair and install heat pumps and service gas furnaces for the few weeks a year you need them.

Try these first

  1. Thermostat set to Cool, a few degrees below room temperature, fresh batteries.
  2. Filter: if it's clogged and gray, change it.
  3. Breakers: check the indoor unit breaker and the outdoor disconnect. Reset once. If it trips again, leave it off and call.
  4. Ice on the copper line? Turn cooling off and the fan on to thaw it. Running a frozen system can damage the compressor.
  5. Water in the drain pan and the system shut off? The float switch did its job. Call us to clear the line.

Heat is a health issue

When it's in the upper 90s with heavy humidity, a house without AC heats up fast. We put households with babies, older adults, people with medical needs and anyone on home medical equipment first. Tell us when you call. Meanwhile, close blinds, use fans, drink water and get to a cooler spot if you need to.

Emergencies we handle

  • No cooling in a heat wave
  • Water leaking from the air handler or through the ceiling
  • Burning smells, loud grinding or buzzing
  • Outdoor units damaged by storms, limbs or flooding
  • Heat pump or furnace failures on the few cold nights we get

Storm season

Hurricane season runs from June through November, the same months your AC works hardest. A little prep goes a long way.

Heavy storm clouds rolling in over a row of wooden houses on a hill

Before a storm

  • Book a pre-season check in spring or early summer so the system is in good shape before the busy weeks.
  • Clear the yard around the outdoor unit and secure anything that could blow into it.
  • Check the stand and straps if your condenser sits on a raised platform. We can inspect and re-secure them.
  • When a storm is close, turn the AC off at the thermostat and the breaker before the power starts flickering. Surges and brownouts are hard on compressors.
  • Cool the house down and close blinds before you lose power, to buy a few more comfortable hours.

After a storm

  • Don't turn the AC back on if the outdoor unit was in standing water, hit by debris, or if the wiring is damaged. Have it inspected first.
  • Wait a few minutes after power returns before starting the system.
  • If water got into ducts under the house, they'll need checking before you run the system.
  • Call us for an after-storm check. Members get priority.

Generators and your AC

  • Portable generators run outside only, away from doors, windows and vents, never in a garage, under a raised house or on a porch. Carbon monoxide is the real danger after a storm. Keep a CO alarm working inside.
  • Don't plug a generator into the house wiring without a transfer switch installed by a licensed electrician.
  • Will my AC run on a generator? It depends on the generator's size and your AC's starting load. Central systems need a lot of power to start. We can tell you your system's electrical needs and, where it makes sense, install a soft-start kit that lowers that starting surge. For standby generators, we work alongside your electrician.

How pricing works

Technician in a red cap going over a written price with a homeowner at the front door

Upfront and flat-rate

We test the system, then give you a written price for the whole job before any work starts. If there's more than one fix that makes sense, you'll see each one with its price.

The diagnostic fee

We'll tell you the diagnostic fee when you call, before we send anyone. No surprises at the door.

Nights and weekends

No overtime markup. The quote at midnight in August is the same as on a Tuesday morning.

Replacements

You'll get a written proposal listing the equipment, the scope, permits and the timeline, usually with a couple of options side by side.

Paying

Major cards and checks. Financing is available on approved credit for system replacements and larger repairs.

Uptown & the Garden District

Uptown, Garden District, Irish Channel, Audubon, Carrollton, Broadmoor and Freret. Big raised center-hall homes, shotgun doubles and camelbacks with tall ceilings, ducts under the house or squeezed into attics, and plenty of window units waiting to be replaced. Ductless and careful duct work are our most common jobs here.

Mid-City, Treme & the Marigny/Bywater

Shotgun singles and doubles, Creole cottages and converted doubles, many split into rentals. Narrow lots make outdoor unit placement tricky. We do a lot of ductless installs and work with landlords on multi-unit properties.

Gentilly & Lakeview

Gentilly's 1940s–60s brick ranches and raised bungalows, and Lakeview's homes, many rebuilt and raised on piers with condensers on platforms. Duct runs under raised floors and outdoor stands that need regular checks.

Algiers & the West Bank

Algiers Point's historic cottages and shotguns, plus newer slab homes across Algiers, Gretna and Harvey. We cross the river every day.

Metairie, Kenner, Harahan & River Ridge

Old Metairie's larger homes, 1960s–80s slab ranches across Metairie and Kenner, and two-story homes with attic air handlers. Common calls: oversized systems, attic drain overflows, duct leaks and full replacements.

Chalmette (call to check)

We serve parts of St. Bernard Parish depending on the day. Call with your address.

Why Bayou Breeze

Teal and green shotgun house with tall shuttered doorsRed shuttered doors in a New Orleans courtyard
  1. We chase humidity, not just degrees

A comfortable New Orleans house is cool and dry. We measure humidity on every visit and set up systems to remove it.

  2. Right-sized, every time

Replacements start with a load calculation for your house. Bigger isn't better here. It's clammier.

  3. We go under the house

Most companies skip the crawl space under a raised home. That's often where the problem is, and we'll show you photos.

  4. Honest about repair vs. replace

If your system has good years left, we'll fix it. If it's time, we'll say so plainly and show you why.

  5. We stand behind our work

If something we fixed isn't right, call us and we'll come back and make it right.

Outside: 98°F and soupy. Inside, where we aim: about 72°F with humidity around 50%.

What neighbors say

Sample review

“Compressor gave out on a Sunday in Mid-City. They got us cool air that night and gave us a clear price for Monday's condenser.”

Desiree L., Mid-City
Sample review

“They told us our upstairs system was oversized. We went smaller on the replacement and the rooms finally feel dry. No hard sell.”

Marcus K., Metairie
Sample review

“Our shotgun double never had central air. They put in ductless heads for both sides without touching the plaster ceilings.”

Camille B., Bywater
Sample review

“Did a pre-storm check in June, re-strapped our condenser stand and found a drain line about to clog. Worth it.”

Terrence W., Lakeview

What a visit looks like

Technician with a clipboard knocking at a homeowner's front door
  1. Call or book online. A person answers and asks what the system is doing.

  2. We tell you the diagnostic fee and an arrival window, and text when the tech is on the way.

  3. We test before we talk: temperatures, refrigerant, airflow, humidity, electrical.

  4. You get a written price for each option. Nothing starts until you approve.

  5. We fix it and clean up, and leave you photos and notes of what we did.

Questions people ask

Do you charge more after hours?

No. Our flat-rate quote is the same on nights, weekends and holidays. We'll tell you the diagnostic fee on the phone before we send anyone, and you'll get a written price for the repair before the tech starts. If you'd rather wait until morning for the repair, you only pay for tonight's visit.

Why does my house feel damp even with the AC running?

Usually the system is oversized and shuts off before it can pull moisture out, the fan is set to "on" instead of "auto," or leaky ducts under the house are pulling in humid air. Sometimes it's all three. We measure humidity and airflow, then fix the cause before suggesting a dehumidifier.

Can you put central air in a shotgun house?

Sometimes, but ductless is often the better fit. Shotguns have long, narrow layouts, high ceilings and plaster that's hard to cut into, and there's limited space for ducts. Ductless heads cool room by room, run quietly and avoid most of the demolition. We'll look at your house and show you both options.

Should I turn off my AC before a hurricane?

Yes, once a storm is close and before the power starts flickering. Turn it off at the thermostat and at the breaker to protect the compressor from surges. Cool the house down beforehand to buy some comfort. After the storm, don't restart it if the outdoor unit flooded or got hit by debris.

Will my AC run on a portable generator?

It depends on your generator and your system. Central AC needs a big burst of power to start, which many portable generators can't handle. We can tell you your system's electrical needs and install a soft-start kit if it helps. Always run generators outside and use a transfer switch installed by a licensed electrician.

Do you remove mold?

We fix the HVAC causes of mold, like clogged drain pans, wet coils, sweating ducts and humidity problems, and we clean the parts of the system we service. If there's mold growth on walls, floors or framing, we'll tell you what we saw and recommend calling a licensed mold remediation company.

How long does an AC replacement take?

Most straight replacements of a matched outdoor unit and air handler take one long day. Jobs with new ductwork under a raised house, a new stand or a switch to ductless can take two or three. We'll give you the timeline in writing with your proposal, and we haul away the old equipment.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. On this demo the license is shown as LA License #DEMO-0000, a fictional number. A real contractor's Louisiana license number appears on every proposal and invoice, and you can verify it with the state licensing board before hiring anyone, including us. We carry insurance on every job.

Who we are

Bayou Breeze is a small, locally owned AC company. Our founder, Andre Batiste, grew up in Gentilly in a raised bungalow where the window units fought a losing battle every August. He spent years crawling under raised houses and into Uptown attics for bigger outfits before starting his own shop, built around one idea: fix the humidity, not just the temperature, and be straight with people about what their system needs.

Today we're a small crew of techs and installers, plus a dispatcher who knows the difference between Uptown and uptown.
